Is Your Website Ready for Affiliate Traffic? Check the Economics First

Evaluate affiliate launch readiness with earnings-per-click math, a mobile buying-path review, order reconciliation, and practical conversion fixes.

A publisher can send the right shoppers and still earn very little if your product page or checkout gets in the way. Before recruiting more affiliates, test the buying journey and work out what a relevant visit is worth. A universal conversion-rate cutoff will not answer that question.

1

Work through the earnings per click

Consider a fictional store with a $100 average commissionable order, a 10% commission, and a 2% purchase conversion rate. Over 1,000 qualified clicks, 20 orders produce $200 in commission, or $0.20 per click before reversals. At 1% conversion, the same assumptions produce $0.10 per click.

Now compare a $500 product paying the same percentage at 1% conversion: that produces $0.50 per click before reversals. A lower conversion rate can still produce higher publisher earnings. Product value, approved commission, conversion, and cancellations all matter. None of these examples predicts a particular partner's results.

2

Test the actual affiliate journey

Open a partner tracking link on a phone. Check that it reaches the intended product, preserves the relevant attribution information, and shows the same offer the publisher is describing. Select a variant, review shipping, and continue through the permitted checkout test flow.

Look for ordinary reasons to stop: an unavailable size, unexpected shipping cost, an unexplained delivery estimate, a discount that fails, or a required account before the shopper understands the purchase. Record the exact page and device. “Improve the website” is not a useful task; “show the shipping charge before the payment step” is.

3

Match the destination to the recommendation

A review of a specific desk lamp should usually link to that lamp or a clearly explained comparison. Sending readers to a large homepage makes them repeat the search. When the featured item is unavailable, give the publisher an appropriate replacement and explain any differences.

A custom landing page can help when it answers a real audience need. Start with one clear use case, such as choosing a lamp for a shallow desk. Show dimensions, mounting requirements, relevant photos, and who should choose something else. Do not build a separate page merely to put the affiliate's name in the headline.

Find Partners Outside the Networks

AffiliateFinders helps you search publisher, review-site, and content-creator profiles beyond the partners you already know from CJ, Impact, or Awin.

4

Separate a measurement problem from a conversion problem

Reconcile test orders with your commerce system and affiliate platform. Confirm the order identifier, commissionable value, discounts, and later refunds. Duplicate events can flatter the report, while missing events can make a good publisher look ineffective.

Compare like with like when reviewing performance. A mobile visitor reading a gift guide is different from a returning customer using a coupon at checkout. Break down the journey by partner, device, landing page, and customer type where the data permits. Small samples should guide investigation rather than settle a verdict.

5

Fix the highest-impact obstruction, then test again

Start with failures that prevent purchase or misrepresent the offer. Next improve unclear product information, mobile layout, and slow or unstable elements on the important path. Use actual customer questions and partner feedback to choose changes.

For an experiment, decide the main outcome and necessary sample before looking at a winner. Track completed and retained orders as well as clicks. A more prominent button may attract attention without improving the purchase. Keep a simple record of the change, date, audience, and observed result.

Your Next Recruitment Step

Before expanding recruitment, send one trusted partner through the journey and ask where their reader would hesitate. Combine that feedback with the earnings calculation. You will have a clearer launch decision than a generic 2% rule can provide.
